CASE STUDY

FLUID MANAGEMENT SYSTEM REPLACEMENT CARTRIDGE

The Goal

Create a disposable cartridge for a peristaltic pump that maintains a constant flow and pressure. Minimize the time to market for this medical device.
The Challenge

The cartridge needs to be easily mounted to the pump unit and still maintain the required spacing for pump at pressure.

The cartridge must eliminate any air bubbles before entering the body.
The Solution

1. A flexible tube was sized to fit into a peristaltic pump head with a one-handed motion. The cartridge was locked into place with lever that controlled the tension of the tube against the pump head to minimize the pump surge.

2. Strategically placed internal baffles coupled with a valve and filter balanced the pressure while eliminating any air bubbles in the fluid stream.

3. A material analysis for biocompatibility was performed to ensure 510K approval without additional submissions.
The Results

The product went directly from concept, to prototype, and into production within months of the start. The unit was entered into clinical studies and made available for surgical procedures without problems.
